Does XDC burn coins? How the burn works

The Cancun upgrade (client v2.6.8) activated at block 98,800,200 on 30 January 2026 and brought Ethereum's EIP-1559 fee model to XDC. Every block has a base fee per unit of gas, and that part of each transaction fee is destroyed instead of paid to validators. Source: xdc.dev, Cancun upgrade on mainnet.

XDC burned in a block = base fee × gas used. We read both values for every block since the upgrade from public XDC nodes and add them up. Tips paid on top of the base fee go to validators and are not counted.

We checked the method against the block explorer. For block 107,950,000 our calculation gives 0.0021587625 XDC, exactly the “Burnt Fees” XDCScan shows for that block (view on XDCScan).

Is XDC deflationary?

Not on its own. XDC's supply is uncapped: masternode rewards create new XDC every epoch, and the burn removes only the base fee of each transaction. With today's activity the burn is far smaller than new issuance, so total supply still grows slowly.

The burn grows with network use, so it is worth watching. For how supply is created and unlocked, see the XDC supply page and the XDC MiCA white paper.
